Instructions
Preparation:
Pre-wash fabric to remove finishes or stains. For every pound of dry fabric (about two adult large T-shirts), use half a bottle (4 oz) of dye with 3 gallons of the hottest water safe for the fabric. Make sure the dye bath has enough water for the fabric to move freely. For a deeper color, double the amount of dye.
If changing to a lighter or different color, use Rit Color Remover before dyeing. Do not use bleach.
Steps:
-
Shake dye well before use.
-
Wear rubber gloves.
-
Add hot water to a plastic bucket, stainless steel sink, or stainless steel pot. Water should be at least 140°F.
-
Add 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent.
-
For cotton, rayon, or linen: add 1 cup of salt.
-
For nylon, silk, or wool: add 1 cup of vinegar.
-
Add dye and mix well.
-
Submerge unfolded, wet fabric into the dye bath.
-
Stir consistently for 30 minutes, or up to 60 minutes for a deeper shade.
-
Rinse with cool water until water runs almost clear.
-
Wash in warm water with mild detergent, by hand or in a washing machine with an old towel.
-
Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative after dyeing cotton, linen, rayon, or ramie to help lock in color.
